Further Support to Access to Justice and Human Rights in the Mitrovica Region
Project “Further Support to Access to Justice and Human Rights in the Mitrovica Region” funded by UNMIK
The project is composed of the following components:
Justice Component
Objective - Increased translation/interpretation capacity of the Basic Court of Mitrovicë/Mitrovica for the period covered and increased capacity of the Court to reduce the backlog of cases through the assistance of legal associates for the period covered
Related Activities:
- Retention of the services of six translators/interpreters at the Basic Court of Mitrovicë/Mitrovica.
- Retention of the services of two legal associates at the Basic Court of Mitrovicë/Mitrovica.
- Retention of services of one legal associate at the North Mitrovicë/Mitrovica Division of the Court of Appeals.
Objective - Improved work conditions at the Basic Court of Mitrovica, through furnishing and equipping a courtroom at the Skenderaj/Srbica court branch

Objective - Increased number of young lawyers from non-majority communities trained to take the Bar Examination in Kosovo
Related Activity:

Training on Bar Examination in Kosovo for a group of minimum twelve young lawyers from the non-majority communities in northern Kosovo.
Objective - Icreased capacities of the Kosovo Free Legal Aid Agency Office in North Mitrovica
Related Activities:
- Provision of services of two legal associates assigned to the Kosovo Free Legal Aid Agency Office in northern Kosovo. One legal associate will be tasked with working with groups in vulnerable situations, including non-majority communities, persons with disabilities, K-Roma, K-Ashkali, and K-Egyptian communities, LGBTI, etc.
- Promotional campaign (in Albanian and Serbian) on the work of the legal associates on local radios.
Objective - Expand the use of alternative sanctions, particularly community work, in the municipalities in the Mitrovica/Mitrovicë region
Related Activities:
- Conduct a research on the use of alternative sanctions in northern Kosovo.
- Organize at least 10 meetings and consultations with the Probation Service, judges, prosecutors, and local self-governments in northern Kosovo.
- Organize one coordination Seminar for relevant stakeholder.
- lmplement the first few community work sanctions.
- Hold two media presentations.
Human Rights component
Objective - Promote, strengthen, and support the Ombudsperson’s role and mandate
Related Activities:
- A forum of Cooperation between Ombudsperson Institution and Civil Society.
- Public Media Campaign and Human Rights Outreach.
- Research on the Impact of Corruption on Human Rights.
- Produce an Ex-officio report on the impact of corruption on human rights.
