"16 days of activism" is an international campaign that begins every year on November 25, marking The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This date was chosen to honor and commemorate the lives of the Mirabel sisters, who were brutally murdered by dictator Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic in 1960.
Gender-based violence is likely the most complex issue in society that cannot be resolved solely by effective legislation and various protection mechanisms because of the deep-seated nature of discrimination, gender roles, and perceptions of women.
Following the end of the "16 days of activism" campaign, we remind that prevention, which starts in the home and continues in schools, which is the best place to learn about how absolutely unacceptable violence is, is the most effective way of resistance and defiance against this plague.
