Since the announcement of the date of the elections in the four northern municipalities by the President of the country – as a result of the resignations of the mayors of the municipalities in the north – the process of organizing elections has been accompanied by numerous problems.
The process was followed by a boycott of the election contest by the candidates of the Serb community, which actually constitutes the absolute majority of the population in these municipalities. Cases of incidents and violence in the northern part have impeded the continuation of the preparations for election administration. The resignations of the relevant election officials of these municipalities have made the adequate organization of these elections even more difficult.
DnV recalls that one of the main principles of elections is free voting. The development of all procedures under numerous security forces, as well as under direct threat to the lives of election officials, but also citizens and candidates, contradicts such a principle. On the other hand, it is more than evident that the Central Election Commission finds it almost impossible to carry out the relevant election operations for the regular and normal holding of these elections. In fact, the CEC has failed to do such a thing even with the assistance of the Police. Based on this situation, it is hard to believe that it will be possible to guarantee security for hundreds of people engaged as election staff on election day or even thousands of citizens with the right to vote. In addition, there may be problems with the opening of the polling centres.
In the current circumstances of the lack of security for the election staff, the lack of candidates from the Serbian community in the electoral race, as ëell as the low likelihood of citizens' participation in the elections, DiA asks the President of the country to initiate consultations ëith the relevant actors to postpone the elections in the four northern municipalities.
