The day of May 9 has been recognized as Europe Day to honor the proclamation made by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Schuman, in 1950, which is considered as the formal beginning of the EU. The Declaration was a proposal to former enemies, France and Germany, to establish an organization to jointly manage their coal and steel industries, in order to prevent another European war.
Today is an opportunity to reflect on the principles of peace, solidarity, and unity upon which the idea of Europe was built. Europe was able to overcome numerous challenges and establish itself as one of the most developed parts of the world primarily because of cooperation and solidarity. As we celebrate Europe Day and Victory Day, we pay tribute to all those who lost their lives in the name of freedom and democracy. Only by working together can we create a better and more prosperous future for all.
