In November 2001, the General Assembly of UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and proclaimed May 21 as World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
This day seeks to promote understanding and deepen awareness about the important relationship between culture and development. Cultural diversity should be a driving force for progress, based on tolerance, mutual respect, understanding, and acceptance. Human dignity, the protection of rights, and basic freedoms of every individual are more valuable within the perspective of cultural diversity. In such a social environment, dialogue and cooperation are inevitable and serve as a prerequisite for further cultural, economic, and overall societal development of democratic and modern societies. It is the duty of all nations to fulfill their existence in the spirit of mutual assistance, and in relation to that, respect for cultural diversity, tolerance, dialogue, and cooperation, based on mutual trust and understanding, are the best guarantees of international peace and security.
ulture encompasses a comprehensive way of life, a general system of values, traditions, art, and beliefs. On this day, we have the chance to broaden awareness of the value of cultural diversity and to encourage living in the spirit of peace, dialogue, and openness.
