NGO Advocacy Center for Democratic Culture and NGO AKTIV organized a public discussion on December 6th, 2023, addressing corruption in Serbian-majority municipalities in Kosovo.
The panelists included Mr. Nenad Radosavljević, from RTV Mir Leposavić and Mr. Darko Dimitrijević, Goraždevac Media Group, who emphasized the challenges faced by journalists and civic representatives in exposing and combatting corruption.
The situation in Serbian communities in Kosovo reveals a troubling pattern of corruption that crosses various sectors. Numerous instances of financial mismanagement, bribery, and criminal activities have been reported, affecting the entire population.
Radosavljević described the situation as involving bribery, corruption, and crime, collectively termed as "widespread plunder." Despite their attempts to draw attention to these issues, both local and higher authorities have been unresponsive, according to Mr. Radosavljević.
Dimitrijević stated that society as a whole is corrupt, emphasizing the upcoming elections in Serbia and investigating contracts linked to political party interests.
Corruption has resulted in substantial financial losses, with specific examples illustrating the misuse of funds designated for development projects.
The action needed to reduce corruption includes providing greater financial support for investigative journalism, as journalists play a crucial role in exposing and raising awareness about corrupt practices. Additionally, there is a need for enhanced accountability within both local and higher institutions to promptly address these issues.
The conclusion of the discussion underscored the importance of fostering transparency, accountability, and supporting initiatives that combat corruption.
